All Embracing Care

All Embracing Care:

The need to utilise the latent capabilities of the impaired to reduce their dependancy on others had long been recognised by Monsignor Michael Azzopardi, our Founder. He believed that providing ‘care’ alone was not enough- it was necessary to develop self-management and social skills and the ability to participate in spiritual activities.

The holistic programme of Care, Habilitation and Spiritual Enlightenment carried out by id-Dar Tal-Providenza’s teams of specialists is specially designed to integrate its residents into society.

Embracing Care

“You have to see to it that man is considered as a whole; body and soul; dignity notwithstanding his physical ailments.”

Care

The Care-workers, who work on shift system twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, are responsible for everything that has to do with caring for their residents including supervising their personal hygiene, supervising meal times, washing-up and overseeing the taking of medicines.

On the 12th January 1968 under the leadership of Sister Maria Assunta Mallia four nuns from the Congregation of the Sisters of St Joan Antide Thouret took up residence in Id-Dar Tal-Providenza. They were the Charity’s original carers who in early February 1968 were responsible for looking after its first residents- a group of children with a range of diverse impairements. Initially aided by volunteers and subsequently by employed lay personnel, the Sisters have given full time service ever since.

Today each flat has an appointed complement of Care-Workers working with a Sister who is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day running of the residence, with special responsibilities for the health and well being of the residents.

All Care-workers attend comprehensive induction courses, first-aid courses and groups also attend university courses. This is all part of an on-going educational programme designed to develop the carers’ skills and keep them appraised of the latest methods of ‘caring’ for their charges.

Above all, the Sisters and Care-workers strive to provide the calm, peaceful, loving environment, which is so important for the well being of all of the residents of Id-Dar Tal-Providenza. Their ‘duties’ lovingly carried out, encompass all aspects of the true definition of the word ‘care’.

In 2003 a group of Id-Dar Tal-Providenza’s staff visited the St Joseph Pastoral Centre in Hendon, London, to learn about the ‘Symbolic Catechesis’ programme that had been set up and was now running in the Diocese of Westminister in London. In Septmember two of the people who had formulated the programme visited Id-Dar Tal-Providenza and gave a seminar followed by a one-week intensive training courses to the staff.

In January 2004 ‘Symbolic Catechesis’ started being practised in Id-Dar Tal-Providenza as a way of helping residents to develop their faith. It is an intuitive approach that overcomes the obstacles of straightforward instruction, which can be a barrier to the impaired. It presents the Gospel using simple language and symbolism.

In May 2004 close relatives and friends were asked to become Faith Companions and join the journey of faith’ with the residents.

Id-Dar Tal-Providenza now has teams of paid staff- six groups of four to five members – who between them meet each resident every month. The feedback from the Faith Companions indicates that the ‘Symbolic Catechesis’ programme is working well.

Id-Dar Tal-Providenza is the only body in Malta developing such a programme for the impaired. The Diocese of Malta is actively encouraging the development of the programme and other Charities on the island are showing a great deal of interest in it.

The Dar Tal-Providenza symbol depicts a wilting flower being gently and carefully nursed back to health. It serves as a constant reminder to us of our commitment to the continued welfare and nurturing of our residents and the support we give to their relatives.

The twenty-four, seven-days-a-week, therapeutic, medical, educational and spiritual care provided with love by our dedicated, professional staff and helpers allow those in our care to develop the necessary social skills to enable them to reach their maximum potential within the framework of modern day society.

Id-Dar tal-Providenza was built on faith in Divine Providence. The generosity of the benefactors who support us and the volunteers who so unselfishly dedicate their free time helps us to achieve the goal to which we are committed; that of continuing our mission – a place we who are more able, take for granted.

Our commitment to nurture those in our care is set in stone
