Malta’s Parliament hosts Arts Exhibition in aid of Dar tal-Providenza

After an absence of two years, an exhibition of 106 works of art donated by 84 Maltese and foreign artists was inaugurated at the Parliament entrance. These works of art will be auctioned off in aid of Dar tal-Providenza on January 1st as part of the televised Festa ta’ Ġenerożità.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Anġlu Farrugia, officially opened the exhibition. In his address, he said that although Dar tal-Providenza goes back a full fifty-six years, it is today a living experience of our people and our nation rather than a story of our past. Maltese and Gozitans have a heart sensitive to those in need. This conscience that favours social solidarity grows bigger and stronger as long as we keep Dar tal-Providenza as a life experience with which we help persons with disability live in dignity.

The Director of the Home, Fr Martin Micallef, thanked the Speaker for once again agreeing to host the exhibition in the Parliament’s entrance, a truly central and accessible location for the public in Valletta. With the full support of Dr Farrugia it can be said that the exhibition has become an annual event except for the last two years when it had to be cancelled due to the realities of COVID-19.

The exhibition, that will remain open till December 26th, is open to the public between 9.00am and 5.00pm Monday to Friday and between 9.00am and 12.30pm on Saturdays and Sundays. One can view the exhibits by presenting his/her Identity Card and the Vaccine Certificate. The catalogue of all the works of art as well as more information on the auction may be accessed online on www.dtpauction.com or www.belgraviaauctions.com.

On new year’s day, Festa ta’ Ġenerożità in aid of Dar tal-Providenza will again be televised on all local stations between noon and midnight. The telethon will be broadcast from the We studios in Qormi where a number of guests will be manning the phones and taking donations. As in every year, Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna will celebrate mass that is broadcast live on PBS at 9.30am from the Home’s chapel.

Presentation of European Citizen’s Prize 2021

It was indeed a special occasion on Tuesday 9th November 2021 for Fr Martin Micallef, Director, and Mrs Nadine Camilleri Cassano, Administrator of Dar tal-Provdenza, to be handed the Diploma of the European Citizen’s Prize 2021. The presentation was made by the European Parliament Vice-President and Chancellor of European Citizen’s Prize, Ms Dita Charanzovà during a ceremony held at the Paul-Henri Spaak building in Brussels.

Ms Charanzovà said that all the awarded projects for the years 2020-2021 are the examples, the inspirations and the real heroes for the work that they do in society.

MEPs Roberta Metsola and David Casa, who put forward the nomination of Dar tal-Providenza, said that the mission of the project submitted provides for homes in an atmosphere similar to that of the family, integrates and empowers persons with disability in the community in conformity with the norms and values of the EU and all this work went ahead even during the exceptionally difficult COVID-19 pandemic circumstances of last year.

During a commemorative medal presentation held at the Malta Europen Parliament office on October 29th, 2021, Fr Martin expressed his appreciation for the recognition by the European Parliament and said that the strategy of the European Union for persons with disability for the decade between 2021 and 2030, is built around the recognition of the rights adopted by various other European countries; independent and, wherever possible, autonomous living; the elimination of discrimination as well as the creation of equal opportunities in every level possible.

The recognition of this work on a European level continues to encourage Dar tal-Providenza in its commitment, so that whatever is done at the Home is strengthened and that the sense of dignity towards persons with disability continues to gather steam in all the work that is done within this sector.

The Head of the European Parliament office in Malta, Dr Mario Sammut said the despite all the difficulties faced during the pandemic, Dar tal-Providenza continued to protect those most vulnerable in Maltese society. He continued by saying that the excellent work done in these very difficult circumstances truly reflects the best of European values. The recognition of both the effort and dedication is of great importance to the European Parliament.

Prior to Tuesday’s ceremony, Fr Martin amd Mrs Camilleri Cassano met up with Maltese MEPs Roberta Metsola, Josianne Cutajar and Alex Agius Saliba.

Dr Agius Saliba said that the Home and its project ‘Monument of Mercy’ demonstrates to all the European Institutions what we Maltese were already priviliged to know. He praised the work done by Dar tal-Providenza and Fr Martin in particular for the spirit of community that is felt in the whole village of Siġġiewi.

Last year’s Maltese winners of the European Citizen’s Prize, the Lockdown Festival Group were presented with the award this year as no ceremony had taken place because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
