€5,600 raised in aid of Id-Dar tal-Providenza

A total of €5,600 was recently raised by Pierre Vella Petroni and Anne Marie Xuereb in aid of Id-Dar tal-Providenza.

Every year, for the last eight years, Vella Petroni and Xuereb have organised a barbecue for family and friends in aid of the Siġġiewi Home.

This year, because of COVID-19 measures introduced by the Maltese Health Authorities, the event did not take place, however, they still collected donations.

The sum of €5,600 was presented by Vella Petroni and Xuereb to Fr Martin Micallef, Director of id-Dar tal-Providenza, who on behalf of the residents and administration of the Home thanked all the sixty-five persons and entities who made a donation to raise this amount.

The Bishop of Tripoli welcomed at Dar tal-Providenza “where the presence of Jesus’s love is felt”

On Tuesday 14th September 2021, the Bishop of Tripoli, H.E. Mgr George Bugeja OFM paid a visit to Dar tal-Providenza in Siġġiewi. He concelebrated mass at the Home’s chapel with Fr Martin Micallef, Director and Fr Trevor Fairclough, Spiritual Director and with a number of residents, workers and volunteers in attendance always respecting the anti-COVID-19 measures in place by our Health Authorities.

Later, Bishop Bugeja had the opportunity to see the various services offered by the Home amongst which where the aquatherapy, the multisensory rooms, the Agricultural Centre and SPRED.
Bishop Bugeja thanked Fr Martin for inviting him to visit the Home saying it was a pleasure for him to meet up with the residents and see for himself the invaluable work done by the workers and administrators. He added that Dar tal-Providenza is indeed a home where he could truly feel the presence of Jesus’s love reflected in the work and the dedication of all involved in order to ensure that each person lives a dignified life whilst given holistic help. Bishop Bugeja imparted his pastoral blessing.

56 years ago the first donation was made for the founding of Dar tal-Providenza

It was on the 12th September 1965 that Mgr Mikiel Azzopardi mentioned for the first time his idea of a home for persons with disability during a radio programme. A young lady who was listening in to the programme sought out Mgr Azzopardi to give him a donation of Lm100, in today’s Euro currency it amounts to around €230. She was saving this money to take a holiday abroad but instead wanted to go with Dun Mikiel’s dream and she gave him her savings to help out persons with disability.

Mgr Mikiel Azzopardi, then Ecclesiastical Assistant General of the Malta Catholic Action, had this dream to improve the quality of life of persons with disability especially those for whom it was difficult to continue living with their parents.

Through Dun Mikiel’s dream and vision Dar tal-Providenza came to life 56 years ago.

H.G. the Archbishop presented with Dar tal-Providenza’s Annual Report for 2020

H.G. the Archbishop, Charles J. Scicluna was presented with a copy of Dar tal-Providenza’s Annual Report for 2020. The presentation, that took place at the Siġġiewi Home, was made by Fr Martin Micallef, Director of the Home, in the presence of Mrs Nadine Camilleri Cassano, Administrator.

This is the second time that the report has been presented in a coloured booklet in Maltese accompanied by an abridged English version. The report lists the work done by the Home, in its commitment to continue offering a residental service of the highest quality to persons with disability who require such service. It goes without saying that the report covers amongst other things the measures adopted by the Home to counter the COVID-19 pandemic and how the residents were affected. The front page shows Prof. Charmaine Gauci during her visit to the Home.

The Annual Report is also presented every year to the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations as requested by law.
